Church Planting in Spain
David & Catherine Cotton
Having come to Spain in 2007 for what we thought was 12 months of mission, we now find ourselves called to a significantly longer term mission with OMS in the villages north of Madrid.
There are 11 such villages that come under the umbrella of OMS’s Vision Norte due to the very limited Christian witness there, particularly to Spaniards. The team is led by a Spanish pastor of one of the four churches started by OMS, who has a real heart for further church planting.
We with our three chidren, Sophie 15, Laura 12 and Joshua 10, live in one of the 11 Vision Norte villages - Algete - and teach English so to build relationships with people in the local community. Walking around the villages distributing advertising leaflets for the language academy, provides numerous opportunities for natural conversations, which fits with our lifestyle evangelism approach to mission. David’s love of sport provides an immediate connection point for his relationships with Spanish men and adolescents. Catherine has a real heart for ministering to women and leads a Bible study group for women from as many as nine countries.
As well as assisting in the church-planting projects, we will continue teaching English and learning Spanish in the local community. OMS in Spain is also responsible for running the Rock of Horeb campsite, ECA – the Christian school for missionary children, and the Marriage Encounter program for Spanish couples.
The Lord has given us a very real enjoyment of Spanish people and we pray we can meet people who we can be true friends to. Spaniards seem largely resistant to the Gospel as they have rejected religion and do not want to hear about beliefs. Our prayer is that the Person of Jesus Christ will be introduced to them, rather than an empty adherence to religious practise. Please let us know at
